What was initially thought to be a minor accident has caused severe injuries to a 63-year old bicyclist. Jesus Rodriguez Cevallos was riding a bicycle along PR-308 in Cabo Rojo near the 20th street intersection when he was hit.
According to the report, 24-year old Edgar Cruz Gonzalez, a resident of Cabo Rojo, was driving a 1999 Toyota Corolla when Rodriguez Cevallos traveled into his path. The Corolla hit the front tire of the bicycle causing it to flip, slamming Rodriguez Cevallos into the vehicle’s windshield before he fell to the pavement.
Rodriguez Cevallos was treated at the scene by paramedics from Cabo Rojo before being transferred to a hospital in Mayaguez. While being cared for, Rodriguez Cevallos’ condition began to deteriorate, and he was transported by air ambulance to the Rio Piedras Medical Center.
Prosecutor Omar Manfredi Ramos ordered photographs and measurements of the scene. The driver was not tested for alcohol impairment because of the length of time for the Division of Patrol and Roads to take jurisdiction of the case as it was initially reported as a minor accident. It was discovered however that the driver of the vehicle did not have a driver’s license.
